Surface Stabilized Combustion Engineering and Technology
Zhongli Weiye Company took the lead in developing premixed surface stable combustion. Surface-stabilized combustion is accomplished through a porous surface through which premixed fuel and air permeate uniformly, and combustion occurs only along the outermost layers. An inherent feature of all surface stabilized burners is the low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Low NOx levels can be achieved by creating a homogeneous mixture of fuel and air with a specific fuel/air ratio to produce the desired adiabatic flame temperature. Since the primary NOx formation mechanism is the thermal fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen at elevated temperatures, control and reduction of adiabatic flame temperature is critical for predictable minimum NOx formation.
Zhongli Albert achieves lower adiabatic flame temperatures by operating leaner (more excess air). But running lean often means unstable combustion, high CO emissions and an irregular flame pattern. This can be avoided when the combustion is stabilized on a relatively large surface with many points for flame attachment. Since combustion occurs uniformly along the surface, the shape of the surface burner determines the shape of the flame.
The adiabatic flame temperature can be further reduced by increasing the air ratio or by diluting the air-gas mixture with an inert gas such as flue gas. Also, since any localized region with a higher adiabatic flame temperature can rapidly increase the rate of NOx formation, to minimize NOx it is necessary to have a very uniform air and gas premix to achieve a uniform temperature along the surface. Another advantage of premixed burners is that the fuel and air are mixed at one location before combustion, unlike most conventional burners where combustion occurs at multiple points as the fuel and air are mixed .
